Discovering the Magic of Storytelling: A Children's Author’s Journey
What Inspired You to Become a Children's Author?
My love for storytelling began in childhood. I filled notepads with princess tales, dreaming of becoming the Caribbean’s Enid Blyton. But societal expectations led me to say "marine biologist" instead.
While studying English at St. George’s University, a children’s literature course reignited my passion. In 2017, I joined Grenada Schools Inc.'s Room to Read program, where I published Carla Dances Soca. Seeing it reach Grenadian primary schools was a childhood dream come true.
How Do You Come Up with Ideas for Your Books?
My stories blend real-life experiences with imagination. Good Boy Milo was born during a Room to Read workshop where I had to craft a story using two words: "dog" and "kite." Watching my puppy, Solo, drag a coconut branch sparked the idea—what if he tried to fly a kite?
Similarly, Carla Dances Soca reflects my childhood. I was the ballet-loving girl who felt out of place when soca music played. These moments, mixed with creative twists, bring my stories to life.
How Do You Hope Children Feel After Reading Your Stories?
Pure joy! Stories don’t always need a moral; they can simply be fun and imaginative. A dog flying a kite may seem whimsical, but it sparks curiosity, encouraging children to wonder, What if? Through playful storytelling, learning happens naturally.
What Makes Storytelling Sessions in Grenada Special for Kids?
Grenadian storytelling is vibrant and expressive—full of animated gestures, voices, and sound effects. It feels like theater, capturing kids’ attention and igniting their imagination. I saw this firsthand in the U.S. while reading to my niece’s class. I worried they wouldn’t connect with the Grenadian elements, but they loved it! This lively, immersive style makes storytelling unforgettable.
What Message Do You Hope Children Take Home from Your Sessions at Our Kids Club?
Stories are windows to different worlds—including their own. While many books transport readers to far-off places, I want children to see the beauty of Grenada in stories like Good Boy Milo. Its vivid illustrations showcase our lush landscapes, reminding kids that their home is just as magical as any storybook setting. Ultimately, I hope to spark curiosity, celebrate our culture, and show how storytelling connects us all.
How Does Travel Inspire a Child’s Creativity?
Travel fuels a child’s imagination, exposing them to new sights, sounds, and experiences that expand their perspective. While books open windows to the world, firsthand experiences deepen their understanding and inspire creativity.
